Frank Perett’s “Illusion”

Book trailer that I directed for NY Times Best selling author Frank Peretti.

We shot this video on location in Nashville, TN. It was my first directing gig with friend and colleague James King- who is a Nashville based DP. Check out his work, he’s awesome. The client, Simon and Schuster (a book publisher) wanted a clever way to promote one of their author’s upcoming books. We decided the best way to do this was to create a book trailer (essentially a film trailer for a book). Frank Peretti is a christian author who’s written several NY-Times best selling novels over the past two decades. The book, Illusion, revolves around mystery and intrigue. The main character dies in a car crash and crazy things suddenly begin to happen when she comes back to life as her 19 year old self. I wanted to communicate the elements of mystery and intrigue with the trailer to ultimately drum up enthusiasm about the book.

Sony NEX-FS700

I normally don’t blog about camera, let alone rumors but this is just plain cool. Sony is expected to release a new camera the FS700 this summer. It is expected to bridge the gap between the FS100 and F3 in terms of price- but is chocked full with a ton of new features! Specs slate it as shooting 4k video and at speeds of up to 120fps. Although it looks as if this frame rate will only sustain for 16 second bursts. Regardless, the camera still shoots 4k, and the best part is its rumored to hit the under $10,000 price point. This is HUGE. Scales to 1080p while recording in AVCHD and also boasts uncompressed 4k out via HD-SDI- making the camera future proof. Other features include built in ND, and a small form factor.

Zeiss Compact Prime Review

Carl Zeiss Compact=

I was given the unique privilege of reviewing a set of Zeiss Compact Prime Cinema lenses this past weekend on a documentary that I worked. (see Music City Underground post) First of all, a special thanks to Rich at Zeiss for making this happen. It isn’t every day that your able to demo some of the finest cinema optics in the world! The documentary consisted of shooting 10 different bands in astudio environment over the course of one day. We shot on 2 Canon 5Dmii and 2 Canon 7D DSLR’s. Thus, given the still camera nature of the DSLR’s, I wanted something that would accomplish two things 1.) improve the lens ergonomics (breathing, focus, etc) and 2.) be cross compatible on all the cameras. The CP primes met both goals.
